7.336 extra-value day

Monday 11/02/2026

Also known as a no-time-for-a-nap day. Started with going out at 7:30 for a standard walk (4.4 miles for the day). Then down to the auditorium to set up for a First Monday Book Talk. The speaker in this case was really interesting, William B. Gould. At 92, he’s a professor emeritus of law at Stanford, but that’s only the tail end of his career. In the 1960s he practiced law on behalf of the United Auto Workers in Detroit. Then in the 1990s he was Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, and played a key role in ending the famous baseball players strike of 94-95. Today he was dropping names like Bobby Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and other people he’d met along the way.

As soon as that ended at noon, I put away the equipment, grabbed some other stuff, and drove to FOPAL, where I worked three hours processing 9 boxes of books. I got back to CH just in time for the 4pm Chorus rehearsal, the first rehearsal for me since I let Mary talk me into being on the chorus this year.

Next was dinner at 5pm, the time for the monthly dinner mixer, where you sit at a randomly assigned table. It almost always ends up being the same people you sat with many times before. From there I had an hour of quiet in my room before going downsairs for a music concert. Steve Gill, an entertainer who’s been here a couple times a year for 15 years, this time singing the songs of Frank Sinatra.

So, set ’em up, Joe. One for my baby and one more for … going to bed early.
